Kosheen @ Newcastle Uni

Kosheen are fast attracting a large following playing their brand of dance and electronica to a very impressed audience at Newcastle University.

By Helen Turley

The students are back in town and the live music scene is again offering an abundance of choice after the summer drought.

This gig may not have been sold out, but the atmosphere was unmissable.

Great reception

Darren, Markee and eventually Sian, entered the stage to Swamp and then kicked off the set with the massive hit Catch from the first album Resist.

Sian seemed to be truly in awe and admiration of the reception she received from the Newcastle audience and she began to relax into her performance.

Wearing a glamorous shimmering black top she strutted her stuff on the small stage and proved that dance acts can cut it live.

The start of the set showcased tracks Recovery and Avalanche, material from their new album. A much darker and rockier sound compared to the earlier drum and bass sound.

The middle part of the set returned to the bands roots. Tracks from Resist, Cruelty, (Slip and Slide) Suicide and Pride really got the masses jumping.

Impressive

You really appreciate the power, quality and strength of Sian’s voice live. Kosheen, a band that actually impress more live than on CD.

The three piece then returned to their newer material, Wish, Coming Home, Empty Skies and Suzy May.

Kosheen rounded the night off in style with their massive dancefloor anthem Hide U. The crowd went completely nuts, probably attempting to evoke the mood of the summer of 2000.

The band were then begged back for an encore that had to be their recent top ten hit All In My Head.
